Understanding the Zooplankton PHENOMENON and its effect on “Fish Catching”
Phytoplankton are very small aquatic plant life. Zooplankton, are very small animal organisms, which feed upon phytoplankton and other zooplankton.
Zooplankton are (one or two millimeter) water-borne life forms, frequently crustacean.
Minnows and small fish up to the size of Bluegills feed upon the swarms of millions of zooplankton as they rise and fall in the water column while free floating/drifting around.
Bluegills, Crappie, Perch, very small Bass and Trout and minnows feed directly upon the zooplankton. This gives the angler the opportunity to offer small baits to these zooplankton foraging pan fish.
* This FOOD CHAIN PHENOMENON attracts these small fish, and minnows, which in turn attract adult Bass, Pike, Walleyes and Trout.
So, take your choice, and go for the foraging pan fish, or for the larger predators lurking around the edges of the zooplankton and smaller fish.
The Bluegills at or near the surface will usually be only two-four inches long.
The larger Gills will be a few feet below them.
Also see: Fish section SCHOOLING BLUEGILLS PHENOMENON for details on how to catch the larger Gills.
There are two methods to help you find the Zoo Show.
With your polarized glasses and big-brimmed hat, watch and search for many small Bluegills near the surface and you could be lucky enough to find and become part of the Zooplankton Phenomenon!!!
This food chain begins with the phytoplankton rising to the sunlight and the Zooplankton feeding upon the phytoplankton. They slowly rise during the day up to near the surface by late afternoon. As the sun sets, so do the phytoplankton and zooplankton settle to the bottom, where they spend the night.
A trip to the ZOO can be Extremely Exciting ! ! !
PHENOMENON or Basic Food Chain Science ? ?
You Decide!!!
Using this knowledge can greatly increase your catch of pan fish or The BIGGER BOYS!!! Many times we’ve caught 30 to 40 good size Gills from a spot only about 15 feet in diameter.
If you don’t mind fishing at night, you can even buy yourself a 12-volt 4 foot long (green) florescent tube light. This can imitate the sun’s light and start a “ZOO SHOW & 3 RING CIRCUS” right next to your boat, raft, or dock.
This ZOO Show will attract small fish, which in turn will attract the Big Ones!!!
During the northern winter, this Phenomenon continues during the Ice Fishing Season. Well-known, is that the so-called early-first ice, and the late-last ice are the most productive times for catching!!!
This is because the planktons are the most active during first and last ice, rising and falling through the water-column, creating concentrated panfish feeding activity!!!
